"My paintings usually begin with a location encountered in my travels- a point of tension in the landscape that suggests qualities monumental, timeless or unsettling.  I draw no distinction between the natural and the constructed environment but, whatever the subject, my process seeks to distil the essence of a place and push it in a particular direction.Back in the studio I work up a painting from the source photographs and drawings of the site that has piqued my interest, stripping away what is unnecessary and enhancing those qualities that provide the most concise statement.  In this way my paintings are not documentary but seek to become something more universal.

What interests me is the fleeting, ephemeral conjunction of location and atmosphere that provides the inexplicable trigger for moments of existential reflection."
